![]() Why should I take time away from preparation for CSAP and other academics to see a Walden Family Playhouse production? Our professional team of educators has created specially designed lesson plans for each production. These lessons cover a wide variety of academic subjects using the theatre experience as a jumping off point for addressing the Colorado Content Standards and K12 Grade Level Expectations. We provide a "way in" to academic subjects like math, sciences, history, language arts, and social studies for students who may not otherwise connect with traditional teaching methods. What evidence is there to support this idea that there is a positive academic effect on students who attend professional theater? Critical Links, a study released by the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Education, offers some valuable insight. The report states that, "In a control group study, students exposed to drama showed impressive gains in standardized test scores." More specifically, it says that, "Increased years of exposure to and involvement in the arts are positively correlated with higher SAT verbal and math scores." The study goes on to say that theater helps children develop a fundamental understanding of language and its uses both in literature and in everyday life. The research of the study indicates that the positive effect of theater is similar to the basic objectives assigned to public education. www.aep-arts.org/CLTemphome.html What can we expect from a Walden Family Playhouse production?
